These were rotting, diseased things out there. Who knows what they had or how infectious they were. Fire, cooking them at high temps., etc. might not even do any good.
Think of it this way, if they all had HIV instead, would anyone still be so apt into doing so? Some people might, but not until I'd know what I'd be up against. Yes, I'd rather starve.
